Press Release: Tempe.com launches $100,000 scholarship fund at ASU
For immediate release….Scottsdale Arizona….Tempe.com, an online advertising media and marketing venture established to promote businesses within the greater Tempe marketplace, has committed to the creation of a pair of scholarship endowments at Arizona State University. The $100,000 pledge will be shared equally between ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the W. P. Carey School of Business.
“This is really the icing on the cake of a much larger project that will include ASU journalism and business students,” said Fred Mercaldo, Managing Partner of Tempe.com, LLC. “We will engage these students in paid internships that will allow them to experience real-world, hands-on business and journalism projects, while also helping to enhance the scholarship endowments.”
Mercaldo, who says his scholarship and project commitment is a tribute to his wife Jean, daughter Kelly Mercaldo Courvisier and son-in-law Todd Courvisier — all ASU graduates — will work with Cronkite students to develop website content for tempe.com, while including W. P. Carey School students in opportunities to market and promote local businesses through the site.
“We are creating a partnership between students in each of these two schools to provide them with meaningful internship experiences that will be of great value as they graduate and enter the professional world,” Mercaldo said. “Their focus will be on the success of a tempe.com section exclusive to the ASU community and its goods and services.
“The scholarship endowments are a critical piece, as they will provide students who may otherwise not have the ability to earn a college degree the chance to do so.”
Chris Callahan, founding dean of the Cronkite School, said the endowment and internship opportunities offered by Tempe.com reflect the values of the college. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to be immersed in a professional environment with a cutting-edge company and we are thrilled that Fred is partnering with both the W. P. Carey School of Business and the Cronkite School.”
W. P. Carey School Dean Amy Hillman added, “We’re thankful for this generous support. At the W. P. Carey School, we believe that business is personal, and the tempe.com project will help more of our students engage directly with local business community members to market and promote Valley businesses. Mercaldo’s scholarship support is much appreciated and will enable us to offer more students a quality educational opportunity for years to come.”
